The social media beauty cult | DW Documentary
Women Beauty April 21st. 2020, 3:37amSocial media are influencing the way women feel about their own bodies. Young women in particular are constantly being confronted with pictures of beautiful female bodies online – images which have almost always been digitally enhanced.
This documentary take a long and alarming look at young women whose everyday lives are dictated by the search for bodily perfection. The more users click their way through Instagram, Facebook and so on, the greater their dissatisfaction with their own appearance becomes. Hardly anyone can escape the pull of this illusory world, where beauty, fitness and lifestyle count for everything. The consequences an even be fatal: slimming and fitness crazes, eating disorders of all kinds, body shaming and sexism. During her research, filmmaker Jennifer Rezny came across a Canadian study that found that young women’s insecurity has been increased by social media. It feels like almost everyone is trying to present themselves on Instagram in slick filter-processed selfies these days. Despite increasing calls for diversity, the “ideal” female body still dominates the media’s perception of female beauty. Numerous movements and initiatives – even on the part of the fashion and advertising industries themselves – have had little effect. “The female body has always been a carrier of female identity. It’s nothing new for us women to be objectified and sexualised,” says Rezny. “There has also been a great deal of social development, but we are still not where we should be and where we women want to be, in an equal society. And in any case, we live in a meritocratic society, one defined and colored by capitalism, which always has to be optimized and improved. It can never be enough.”

This is really giving rise to body dysmorphia and it’s scary the vanity is too real everyone is trying to fake a perfect life on social media.

Moral of the story (as suggested by me):
Girls! Just about anyone can be beautiful; just study a tiny bit about health and nutrition and take up at least one (if you haven't already done so) physical hobby, not necessarily of Olympian standards. Don't worry about your facial appearance; that's what hair stylists and a little make up is for. Feel free to thumbs up this comment a year from now.

That notion of obsession by numbers being the hallmark of capitalists society is false. You have no idea how obsessed were in my country communists by production numbers and ramping up production just to report higher yields… it went to extremes where we were mass-producing goods that nobody wanted. We did it because it looked good. Reported numbers were stellar, awards for that were mass-produced as well. If nothing than this concept is closer to communists then capitalists. Surprisingly.
Numbers as a symbol of inflated illusions that made us feel good. That sounds exactly like my country 30 years ago. And under the hood misery.

I feel sorry for that journalist. If you really have to resort to insulting a woman's body to get back on her work and her writing, you really aren't capable of logical or constructive thought.

this shows how society disregard men, portraying women as particularly victims of social media, when studies show that men are struggling way more when it comes to developing relationships, a great deal of men nowdays have lives of complete alienation and social isolation, while studies show that for women it hasn't had a significant change
